Gunn_ReneeI am using the widget Spreadsheet to Form to look up categories of plants based on their genus. I have listed in my spreadsheet the genus in both upper and lower case such that it does not matter what the user enters. The form only seems to find the match for lower case entries. Any ideas why?
My form is here: https://www.jotform.com/build/260788406660161

Podo: Support SpecialistHi Renee,
Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. I'm an AI assistant here to assist you.
The issue you're experiencing with the Spreadsheet to Form widget is related to case sensitivity. According to the widget's specifications, the unique code used for searching in the spreadsheet is case-sensitive. This means that the input entered in the form must exactly match the case format of the entries in your spreadsheet.
Even if you have listed the genus in both upper and lower case in your spreadsheet, the widget will only find matches that exactly correspond to the case entered by the user. This is why your form only finds matches for lower case entries if the user inputs lower case.
To address this, you might consider standardizing the case format in your spreadsheet and instructing users to enter the genus in that same case format. Unfortunately, the widget does not currently support case-insensitive matching.
Here’s a summary of the key points about the Spreadsheet to Form widget:
- The unique code used for searching is case-sensitive.
- The form field labels must exactly match the column names in your spreadsheet.
- The widget supports various form elements like Short Text, Dropdown, Single Choice, etc.
For more details, you can refer to the Spreadsheet to Form Widget page.
Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Gunn_ReneeTo try to work around the fact that the widget is case sensitive, I included both the upper and lower case version in my excel file. But it is only matching the lower case.

Podo: Support SpecialistHi Renee,
Thanks for your follow-up. The Spreadsheet to Form widget only supports case-sensitive matching for the unique code used to search the spreadsheet. Including both upper and lower case versions in your spreadsheet does not bypass this limitation because the widget will only match the exact case of the input entered by the user.
Since the widget is matching only the lower case entries, it suggests that the input entered by users is in lower case, and the widget is finding matches only for those exact lower case entries. The widget does not currently support case-insensitive matching or searching for multiple case variations simultaneously.
To work around this, you can:
- Standardize the case format in your spreadsheet (e.g., all lower case) and instruct users to enter the genus in that same case format.
- Alternatively, you might consider using a custom script or integration outside of the widget to handle case-insensitive matching if your use case requires it.
Unfortunately, the widget itself does not have a built-in feature to match both upper and lower case entries regardless of user input case.
Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Lorenz JotForm SupportHi Renee,
I understand that you've listed in your spreadsheet a version of data in both upper and lower case, so it would pull the same information. Would it be okay if you share the excel file you're using, so we can clone your form and further investigate the issue? You can upload it to Google Drive and share with us the link.
Once we hear back from you, we can help you sort this out.
-
Gunn_ReneeThanks for looking into this. The data is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15KW4pt8ImrRbPpVKp8h1XQzehhwguMJxN9WW4Murw0Q/edit?usp=sharing
I export it out as a excel file to upload to the form.

Lorenz JotForm SupportHi Renee,I
I'm unable to access the link, can you set the file's general access setting to Anyone with the link, so we can check and use it.
Once we hear back from you, we can help you sort this out.

Gunn_ReneeSorry about that. Fixed it now.

Jessica JotForm SupportHi Renee,
I cloned your form and test it, and had the same issue, so I created a ticket and escalated this to our Developers. Although we don't know exactly when it'll be fixed, we’ll circle back to this thread when we have an update.
-
Gunn_ReneeThank you. Could you add to the ticket that some of random entries don't seem to be matching either? For example 'gymnocactus' is not bringing up the correct 'Category'. It seems to think it found a match, but 'Category' is blank.
