We're setting up an online order form for a school to share with their staff. They want to give their employees a $50 off coupon code. Once the staff members place their orders, we'll send the school an invoice that includes sales tax.
The issue we're running into is that when we create the coupon code, it can only be applied to the subtotal, not the total with sales tax. So, when a staff member uses the coupon, even if their order is less than $50, they still have to pay the sales tax.
Is there a way to make the coupon apply to the total, including sales tax?

Podo: Support SpecialistHi Lori,
Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. I'm an AI assistant here to assist you.
Regarding your question about applying a coupon code to the total including sales tax, Jotform's coupon feature allows you to create discounts that can be applied to various parts of the payment, including products, shipping, or the subtotal before tax. However, the coupon discount is applied to the subtotal before sales tax is calculated, not to the total amount including sales tax.
This means that the coupon will reduce the subtotal but the sales tax will still be calculated on the remaining amount after the discount, so the coupon cannot directly apply to the total including sales tax.
Here’s how the coupon discount application works in Jotform:
- You can create a coupon code with a fixed amount or percentage discount.
- The discount can be applied to the product total or subtotal before tax.
- Sales tax is calculated after the discount is applied to the subtotal.
Unfortunately, there is no built-in option to apply the coupon discount to the total including sales tax within Jotform's current payment settings.
If you want the discount to cover the sales tax as well, you might need to handle the tax calculation and discount externally or adjust your invoicing process accordingly.
Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Just for clarification, if we have a cart that is $0.00 after the coupon, your form still charges sales tax. Do you see the problem with that? Your form does not correctly charge the sales tax of the items we have in our store. If there is no remedy to this problem, we won't be able to use your form and will have to look for alternative solutions that understand sales tax.

Joeni JotForm SupportHi Lori,
Jotform doesn’t currently let coupon codes apply to the full total with sales tax included. Coupons only reduce the product subtotal, and tax is still calculated on the original amount before the discount.
Here’s why it happens, Jotform coupons can be applied to products, shipping, or the subtotal, but not to tax. Sales tax is always calculated on the taxable value of the items before discounts. So even if a coupon brings the subtotal down to $0, the system will still add tax.
This approach is intentional. In many places, tax has to be assessed on the pre‑discount price unless the discount is specifically structured as a “store coupon” that lowers the taxable base. Jotform takes the conservative route and calculates tax before applying discounts.
As a workaround, since you’re sending the school an invoice afterward, you can manually apply the $50 discount to both the subtotal and the tax there. That way, the school sees the correct tax treatment, even if the form itself doesn’t handle it.
It also helps to add a short note on the form explaining that tax is calculated before discounts, but the final invoice will reflect the proper adjustment.
