API Integration: Email Notifications Not Sent When Submitting via API

Asked on February 28, 2026 at 2:14 PM

I am using the API to enter records into a form, but I noticed that when I do it that way, the email is not sent as it is when data is entered directly into the form. The endpoint I am using is:

    https://api.jotform.com/form/{form_id}/submissions?apiKey={api_key}

    What could be the problem?

    Thanks,

    Héctor

    Hi Héctor,

Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. I'm an AI assistant here to assist you.

When you submit records to a form using the API endpoint https://api.jotform.com/form/{form_id}/submissions?apiKey={api_key}, the email notifications that are normally sent when data is entered directly into the form may not be triggered automatically. This is because the API submission process does not always trigger the email notification system by default.

Here are some important points to consider to troubleshoot this issue:

    • Check your form's email notification settings: Make sure that the notification emails are properly set up in the form's Settings > Emails tab.
    • API submissions might not trigger emails automatically: Email notifications and autoresponders are typically triggered by user submissions through the form interface, but API submissions may require additional configuration or manual triggering of notifications.
    • Review your API usage and permissions: Ensure your API key has the necessary permissions and that you are using the correct endpoint and payload format.
    • Check email logs and spam folders: Verify that emails are not being blocked or sent to spam. Also, check the email logs in your Jotform account to see if the emails were generated.

For more detailed guidance, you can review the email notification setup and troubleshooting guides in Jotform's help resources.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

When you say that the API submissions might require additional configurations, what are those configurations?

    Hi Héctor,

It takes no time at all to Set up a Notification Email, so you'll get an email after someone fills out your form. Here’s what you’ll do:

    1. In Form Builder, in the orange navigation bar at the top of the page, click on Settings.
    2. Next, click on Emails in the menu on the left.
    3. Select Notification Email from the Other Email Options section.

    1. Then, go to the Recipient tab, and enter the email address where you want to receive emails every time there is a submission on your form.
    2. Finally, click on Save Email at the bottom.

I checked the settings and the recipient email address is correctly configured in the notifications. However, it still does not send the email when done via API, but it does send the email when filling out the form manually. In other words, the problem persists.

    Hi Héctor,

Since your notification email settings are correctly configured and emails are sent when the form is submitted manually but not via the API, here are some important points to consider:

    • When using the API to submit data, email notifications may not be triggered automatically as they are with manual submissions through the form interface.
    • This behavior is expected because API submissions are treated differently and might require additional handling to trigger email notifications.
    • Check your email logs in your Jotform account to see if the notification emails were generated or blocked.
    • Ensure your API key has the necessary permissions and that you are using the correct endpoint and payload format.
    • Verify that the email is not landing in spam or being blocked by your email provider.

If you are performing test submissions via API, note that test submissions typically send notification emails to the account owner's email address by default, not to the configured recipient email.

To confirm notifications are working correctly, perform a live submission or wait for an actual user submission.

If the issue persists after these checks, it may require manual triggering of notifications or additional API configurations which are not standard behavior.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

    Hi Héctor,

Unfortunately, sending emails such as notification and autoresponder messages is not triggered when a submission is added via API. The same applies to integrations connected to the form.

While the feature you're looking for isn't available at Jotform right now, we've gone ahead and escalated your request to our developers. Exactly when or if it's developed depends on their workload, how viable it is, and how many other users also request it. If there are any updates, we’ll circle back to this thread and let you know.

Thanks for your patience and understanding, we appreciate it.

I have the same issue. Upsetting that the jortform automations are useless with API.

    Hi Good_Boy_Graphics,

Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. I understand you are looking to trigger email notifications and automations using the API. Right now, sending emails and triggering integrations is not supported when a submission is added via API.

While that feature isn't available in Jotform right now, I've sent your request to our Developers for review. When or if it gets developed will depend on their current workload, how possible it is, and how much demand there is from other users. If/when we have any updates, we'll follow up here and keep you posted.
