Hi Alan,
Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. Since the cell is set to text box, your form users have the ability to add a text. Take a look at the screencast below:
If I misunderstood the issue, Can you explain a bit more about what you want to do?

I need to use two colmuns to add numbers - the thrid i wanted to use to add notes

Hi Alan,
I see what you mean now. Since the Input Type’s set to currency, it throws an error when you add text to the third column. Check out the screenshot below for example:
Even if we switch the Input Type to Multi-type Columns, there’s no option to mix currency and textbox fields in the same column. What I’d suggest for now is to use the Textbox Input Type instead. This way, the field can handle both numbers and text without any issues. Let me show you how:
1. In Form Builder, select the Input Table.
2. Click on the Gear icon to open Input Table Properties.
3. In the menu that opens on the right, under the Fields tab, choose Textbox as the Input Type.
