We are hoping to ask folks what university they go to, but everyone has slight variations in how they type their school name.
Does JotForm make it possible to do some sort of database search for possible values? Some of our struggle with misspellings, slight variations ext may be avoided if we have a controlled field. Then, only if their school doesn't appear can they manually enter it.

Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. You can use the Dropdown element with pre-written options, allowing form users to select their university from the list. Then, you can add a short text below the dropdown, prompting users to manually enter their university if it’s not listed in the options. Check out the screencast below as a sample:
