How it works in 4 simple steps

1. Enable AI Agents

The first step is to enable AI Agents from the Admin Console and toggle on the Instagram Agent option. Note that you need to be an Admin on your Jotform Enterprise instance to do this.

2. Connect your Instagram

If you have an existing agent that’s already trained with your brand or organization’s knowledge, or if this is your first agent with Jotform Enterprise, you can add Instagram Agent capability simply by connecting your Instagram account in the Build or Publish page of the AI Agent Builder.

When you click the Log in with Instagram button in the Publish page of the AI Agent Builder, you’ll be prompted to allow Jotform access. Be sure to allow access to both messages and comments.

3. Auto-train your agent

The next step is your agent’s training. And the good news is this happens on its own!

By default, the Instagram Agent will train itself on your Instagram bio and posts. Your agent also reviews your previously sent DMs to understand the tone and style of your messages.

The more your agent learns, the better it will adapt to your style and tone.

And voilà! Your Instagram Agent is now set up and ready to begin helping you respond to DMs, comments, and mentions.

4. Reply automatically

Once setup is complete, you can choose what your Instagram Agent responds to. You have several options: Your agent can instantly answer DMs, story replies, post comments, and story mentions, no matter what time of day or night. Simply toggle on the abilities you want. As a result, anyone who shows an interest in your brand will feel seen.

Whether you want to automate replies to DMs, comments, story replies, or story mentions, you have full control over what your Instagram Agent responds to, keeping conversations alive and engaging.

To access the agent abilities features, open the Publish page of the AI Agent Builder and choose Instagram Agent from the sidebar. Alternatively, in the Build page, choose Instagram from the Channels sidebar, then click the gear icon to open the Instagram Settings panel and click the Abilities tab.

In both the Build and Publish pages of the AI Agent Builder, you can select which reply capabilities to enable for your agent. For instance, if your account is heavy on stories but you’re less interested in comments on infrequent posts, you can toggle on the reply options for DMs, story replies, and mentions, but leave the comments reply feature disabled.

Response intelligence and flexibility

We’ve talked about the “what,” so now let’s get into the “how.” The Instagram Agent gives you the flexibility to guide the kind of responses you want your social assistant to write.

Each agent ability lets you set conditions on how your agent replies. In the Build page, in the Abilities tab of the Instagram Settings panel, click the gear icon next to a reply option to configure settings. In the Instagram Agent window of the Publish page, click the gear icon next to a reply option to configure settings.

For example, if you’re a clothing retailer and want your agent to respond to DMs related to merchandise or order questions, you can set it to reply only when certain keywords are included.

First, click the gear icon by Reply to DMs. Then, in the Set Up Agent Reply section, click DMs with keywords, and enter your desired keywords in the field. When you’re done, click Save.

Advanced customizable settings also let you ensure your agent will only respond to users with certain follower thresholds or within the time windows that you set.

In the Reply to Comments options, you can also elect to have your agent reply with a DM or a comment. You can specify exactly what it says in the DM, or have it answer using the Knowledge Base associated with your agent.

By leveraging the agent’s Knowledge Base in its replies, you can set additional automations in motion, which we’ll get into shortly.

For those with a multilingual audience, your agent will always respond intelligently by auto-detecting the language of messages and replying in that language.

Smart control and safety

You control whether you’d like to pause, edit, or take over any conversation your agent is involved with. To pause your agent, in the Instagram Agent window of the Publish page, click the three-dot icon in the Connected Account section. In the menu that opens, simply click Pause to temporarily pause your agent from replying. You can open this menu again and click Resume to have your agent begin auto-replying again.

You can monitor your Instagram conversations in real time in the Conversations page. In the Agent Summary section of the Instagram Agent window, just click View Conversations.

When a conversation gets to the point where you’d like to intervene, simply click the Take Over button so you can run with the ball your agent is handing off!

On the safety front, rest assured that your Instagram Agent is fully API-compliant and rate-limit safe according to Instagram’s user guidelines. So your agent is free to respond to users without you needing to worry about violating any terms.

Fully loaded automation

With a few clicks you can add automatic actions that your Instagram Agent will take under certain circumstances, bringing your workflow automations to another level!

In the AI Agent Builder, open the Train page and choose Actions from the sidebar. This window lets you choose which channel your agent performs specific actions in (the Channels dropdown), what circumstances of a user conversation prompt the action (the When dropdown), and what the action actually is (the Do dropdown).

Say you get a DM from a customer who has feedback about an item, and you’d like to send them a feedback form to fill out. Here’s how you’d set that up:

  1. In the Channels dropdown, make sure Instagram is checked.
  2. In the When dropdown, click User talks about. An About field will appear. Enter “Feedback on a product” or a similar phrase.
  3. In the Do dropdown, click Fill form. A Form dropdown will appear. Select your feedback form.
  4. Click Save.

And that’s it.

Once this action is set up, if one of my customers expresses (hopefully) positive sentiment about a product, then my agent will gently guide them to fill out a customer feedback form in a natural and organic way.
